“Mother’s Day: The Blue Bowl”

with Rev. Beth Banks, Lenore Hirsch, and Brian Shaw

Alice Walker found a blue bowl in her mother’s cupboard that was beautiful, and yet cracked and imperfect. Walker asks, “Mama, can I have this bowl?” “Take it,” her mother says. The mix of memories that are held in this bowl begin the message for our Mother’s Day service.

Altar: We’ll create an altar to mothers or chosen parents. You’re invited to bring mementos of your mother, or a person who took the role of supporting you as a mother-figure. Use your imagination! Objects, food, or quotations can also be added to the altar.

In her ministry, Rev. Beth Banks served congregations and university campuses in Syracuse and Rochester, NY. Most recently she was a parish minister for the UU Church of Davis. She is currently working with mid-career professionals enrolled in a ten-month residential Fulbright Scholar program at UC Davis. She loves her role as the program’s Friendship Host Coordinator.

Her expertise for this service includes a growing appreciation for how our being perfect is both over-rated and undesirable. Imperfections are what remind us of the importance of love.
