Is Unitarian Universalism a new tradition?
No. Both Unitarianism and Universalism have deep roots. The Universalist Church of America was founded in 1793, and the American Unitarian Association in 1825. The two traditions joined to form the Unitarian Universalist Association in 1961.
Is Unitarian Universalism considered a Christian based faith?
Our beliefs are diverse and inclusive. We have no shared creed. Our shared covenant (our eight Principles) supports “the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.” Though Unitarianism and Universalism were both liberal Christian traditions, this responsible search has led us to embrace diverse teachings from Eastern and Western religions and philosophies. Some Unitarian Universalists identify as Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Pagan, Agnostics, Atheists, or Humanists. This is a community where different ways of finding meaning are respected and encouraged. We provide a safe place to explore your spiritual path. For more information about our faith, please see What We Believe.
Will I be welcome?
Yes, we are a welcoming community. One of our core beliefs is to celebrate diversity and each person’s unique perspective. Please bring your authentic self and see if our community is a good match.
Will I be welcome if I’m gay or lesbian?
Yes, we welcome people identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) and other orientations and genders.
Will I be pressured to convert to Unitarian Universalism or to join this church?
No. Unitarian Universalism is a faith that does not pressure people to declare themselves UU unless they feel that the faith is a fit for them. Membership carries specific rights and responsibilities and often new members wait to make sure this is the right place for them prior to formally becoming active members.
What are sermons like?
Most sermons are based on a topic, historical event, writing, or a fundamental aspect of living rather than scripture. Sermons strive to offer thought-provoking ideas, insights, and reflections. Our minister Susan Panttaja, Guest Ministers, and guest speakers provide sermons.
Do you provide childcare and Sunday school?
Yes, we provide childcare on Sundays from 10:45 AM to 12:45 PM. On most Sundays, we also have Children’s Religious Education – please read more about our programming and topics we discuss.
Is your church accessible to people in wheelchairs?
Yes, our building and bathrooms are accessible. All elements of the Sunday service can be enjoyed while remaining seated.
What should I/ we wear?
Many people dress casually. Some people dress more formally. Children should wear comfortable clothes.
What holidays and ceremonies are celebrated?
Unitarian Universalism has two unique celebrations. In late summer, we kick off our new year with a Gathering of the Waters. Participants bring water from summer travels or other meaningful events from the past year and come together again as a community. Flower Communion is celebrated in the spring near Easter, Passover and other spring festivals. We hold a traditional Christmas Eve service and often present a Christmas pageant in addition to Solstice celebrations.
