Honoring Transgender People
This week we mark Transgender Day of Remembrance, a time set aside to remember the transgender beloveds who lost their lives in the past year due to anti-trans violence. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 36 transgender people were killed in the past 12 months. The number is likely higher because such deaths are typically underreported.
Unitarian Universalists affirm the inherent worthiness, dignity, and holy wholeness of transgender and gender-expansive/nonbinary people. We have long embraced trans members and clergy. At this time in our nation when trans rights are under attack, we are working to protect the safety and autonomy of our trans kin.
The Unitarian Universalist Association has released this beautiful and powerful message of love, resilience, and affirmation. As Rev. Jami Yandle, the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Transgender Support Specialist, says:
May we know we are rooted
In the infinite divinity
Not relegated to the outskirts of the web of all existence
But enshrined at its core.
May this message bring comfort, strength, and hope. You are sacred. You are loved.
