Minister’s Message

Dear Ones,

“It’s the circle of life
And it moves us all
Through despair and hope
Through faith and love” – Tim Rice

A few days before the new year, I journeyed to San Francisco to see the theatrical production of The Lion King. It’s the story of a lion cub born to be king, who is manipulated into believing he is unworthy of that title and finds contentment on the sidelines for a time. Eventually, he is reminded of his obligation to his Pride, and finds the courage to take power back from his evil uncle, and lead with honor.

I love this story and identify with Simba. Although it’s tempting to hang out with Pumbaa and Timon, especially when we feel powerless to change “the system,” there is more to life than “no worries for the rest of your days.” We humans are, after all, social creatures. We have obligations to one another. Although we may feel unworthy at times, or too small to have an impact, each of our efforts matter, as we “find our place on the path unwinding.”

Given the heightened tensions in this country and around the world, it would be easy to let despair push us to the sidelines. It would be easy, but it would not be true to our higher values that call us to work for a just democracy, equity, the dignity of all, and the protection of our planet. Thank goodness we don’t have to do this work alone! Together, we can keep hope alive. Together, let’s renew our commitment to use our collective power for the common good. Happy New Year!

In faith,
Rev. Susan
